Sri Lanka is a fantastic place to visit. The people are friendly. Everything is very affordable. The Indian Ocean is very comfortable, even at Christmastime. The traffic is terrible so getting around is a pain, but once you arrive at your destination everything is very fun and relaxing. We spent several days of our Christmas vacation in Sri Lanka. We spent most of the time in Colombo at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. But we also spent two days driving up to Kandy and back. The trip up to Kandy is slow, but there are many interesting places to stop along the way, including an elephant orphanage. We stopped at a nearby place where you can take a ride on a pachyderm.
Relaxing in a hamock at the beach.
Just the girls, relaxing in the sun.
The Indian Ocean waters were just right on Christmas eve.
This was the view from our room in the Mount Lavinia Hotel.
We brought some Christmas presents with us and had a small present opening on Christmas morning in our hotel room.
We rode a tuk-tuk to town from our hotel. It was amazing that we could fit our entire family of five in the back seat of this three-wheeled motorcycle taxi.
A couple of workers at a tea factory in Kandy pose with Claudia and the kids.
We all enjoyed a complementary cup of tea after the informative tour.
The Mahaweli Reach Hotel in Kandy was exceptionally nice, and had a great pool as you can see.

Riding elephants near Kandy.
This was the longest and most terrifying 15 minutes of Claudia's life.
After you ride you have to wash your own elephant. They use a coconut husk for a loofah.
The elephants are trained to obey a variety of commands, including "spray the white guy with water."
