In May we got to do something few people ever get to do--set foot in Saudi Arabia. We took a drive trhough a small stretch of the Eastern Province from Qatar to Bahrain. the desert changes many times on this short stretch of road, from nothing but sand to rock, from totally baren to lots of small desert plants. It is really quite remarkable.
What do you know? They have camels in Saudi Arabia!
This is what you see on the road from Salwa on the Qatari border to Hafoof: a whole lot of nothin'.
You'll find numerous date farms along the way. Saudi dates are arguably the best in the world.
Picnicking roadside, the Georges demonstrate just how Bedouin they can be.
Not all deserts are created equal. The desert of Saudi Arabia takes advantage of the third dimension, height, a lot more than the desert of Qatar.
